Postnatal Massage Cairns
Postnatal Massage Cairns
Postnatal massage is a way to support a woman’s recovery after childbirth; a way to celebrate the amazing abilities of her body; and a way to create a moment of stillness, of meditative peace and reflection in the rollercoaster of emotions of new motherhood.
Post natal massage will assist with sore arms, neck pain and tension from breast feeding posture.
It will also help with post birth back and hip pain.
A postnatal or postpartum massage is a specialized massage therapy designed to support the physical and emotional recovery of a woman after childbirth. This type of massage focuses on addressing the specific needs and challenges that a woman may experience during the postpartum period. Here are several reasons why someone might seek a postnatal massage and what it is used for:
-
Relief from Muscle Tension and Pain: During pregnancy and childbirth, a woman’s body undergoes significant physical stress and strain. Postnatal massage can help alleviate muscle tension, soreness, and pain that often result from the stresses of labor and delivery.
-
Promotion of Healing and Recovery: Postnatal massage assists in promoting the healing process after childbirth by increasing blood circulation and lymphatic flow. This aids in reducing swelling, aiding tissue repair, and supporting the overall recovery of the body.
-
Improvement of Posture: Pregnancy can cause changes in posture due to the extra weight and shifts in the body’s center of gravity. Postnatal massage can help realign the body and improve posture by addressing muscle imbalances and tensions that may have developed during pregnancy.
-
Stress and Anxiety Reduction: The postpartum period can be emotionally challenging for new mothers due to hormonal changes, lack of sleep, and the demands of caring for a newborn. Postnatal massage provides a soothing and nurturing environment, promoting relaxation and reducing stress and anxiety.
-
Assistance with Hormonal Balance: Hormones fluctuate significantly during and after pregnancy. Postnatal massage can help balance hormones, aiding in the regulation of mood and emotions during the postpartum period.
-
Support for Breastfeeding: Some postnatal massages may include techniques to alleviate tension in the chest and shoulders, which can be beneficial for breastfeeding mothers. By reducing tension in the upper body, the massage may facilitate improved breastfeeding experiences.
-
Scar Tissue Healing: Postnatal massage can aid in the healing of cesarean section scars or any other surgical scars related to childbirth. Massage techniques can help break down scar tissue and improve the appearance and comfort of the scar.
-
Enhanced Relaxation and Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for postpartum recovery. A postnatal massage can promote better sleep by relaxing the body and mind, helping new mothers achieve a more restful and rejuvenating sleep.
-
Enhanced Emotional Well-being: Postnatal massage provides a sense of nurturing and care, which can positively impact a new mother’s emotional well-being. It offers a valuable opportunity for self-care and can contribute to a better overall mood and mental health.
-
Reconnection with Body and Self: After childbirth, a woman’s body may feel unfamiliar and changed. Postnatal massage can aid in the process of reconnection with one’s body and self, fostering a sense of acceptance, self-appreciation, and empowerment.
In Other Cultures around the world –
In many cultures, there is a confinement period after birth, when the new mother is looked after and nourished and helped to heal – post natal massage is part of that. It is a really great way to self care after birth. If we did MRI scans of pregnant women we would see how the hips open during the pregnancy, becoming wider and wider, and that after birth it is paramount to help close them back to their normal width, otherwise mothers suffer from pelvic instability.
In traditional cultures, the 40 days of the postnatal period represent a sacred time. In Ecudor, women are given this massage within hours of the birth and receive it again at least 5 or 6 times during the first 40 days postpartum. The massage stimulates blood flow which in turn: cleans, renews, moves fluid, moves hormones, stimulates the immune system, and helps tone muscles and tissues. According to Rocio, our hips also support the weight of the spine and head and they are therefore the seat of unresloved emotions and trauma, which can be felt upon the hips as knots that need to be released during the massage.
Post natal massage can be thought of as a remedial massage combined with a relaxation massage!
